Veteran PSDA Education Director Retires
Harriet Carter, CDC, director of member retention and continuing education, retired from PSDA on Mar. 31 after 35 years of service. Carter has been involved with education programs at the association almost since their inception, and is fondly remembered by many PSDA members as their first introduction to the industry. “From the bottom of my heart I love the members of this association,” she said. “Their enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit for the industry have kept me going all these years.”
She joined the association in Old Town Alexandria, Va. in 1973, becoming the seventh staff member in the office. “I wanted to learn about American businesses,” said Carter, who grew up in Germany and had her first job in the banking industry. “If I could have written an association dream job, this would be it,” she said.
Carter officially managed her first education program, the “Sales Service Specialists’ School” in 1979, and continued to help develop and teach at week-long education programs nationwide for nearly three decades. Until recently, Carter worked on membership and Print University. She is also the author of several books in the PSDA Product Knowledge Series, home study courses, as well as both a Certified Forms Consultant and a Certified Document Consultant—examinations she passed with the help of a local distributor study group. “The members are able to participate in the association because of Harriet’s efficiency and organization,” said Stan Ritter, CEO of Superior Business Associates, Greenville, Tenn., who taught with her from 1981-1995. “She cared about the people and about the industry. We all will miss her.”
This spring, Carter plans to relax by traveling to Germany, visiting family and friends. Afterwards, she says, she will probably pursue a degree in another field while staying in the Washington, D.C. area. “I love archeology, history and philosophy, and learning in general,” she says. “There is so much to explore.”
